Privacy campaigners have accused local councils of secretly preparing to levy “pay-as-you-throw” rubbish taxes.

Councils say they want to reduce the amount of rubbish going to landfill

A survey by Big Brother Watch found the number of councils installing microchips in rubbish bins has increased by nearly two thirds in a year.

Campaigners say the chips can be used to weigh the amount of trash thrown away by householders and claim the technology will be deployed by councils to charge for waste disposal
